PRINCETON, N.J. - Melanie Meerschwam (Jr., Amstelveen, The Netherlands) and Ilvy Friebe (Fr., Bonn, Germany) were named Ivy League Player and Rookie of the Week, respectively, after their performances in last weekend's sweep of Harvard and Boston University.
Meerschwam scored the game-winner in overtime against Harvard by knocking in a rebound. The victory helped keep Princeton within striking distance of the Ivy League title, the Tigers are a game behind Brown with two games remaining. She also blasted in a penalty corner against Boston University for the game-winning goal against the No. 13 Terriers.
Friebe came into the Harvard game with four career goals and doubled it during a phenomenal weekend. She tied the score at 2-2 against Harvard with a goal late in regulation, which was also scored on a penalty-corner rebound. She proceeded to take control of Boston University by recording her first career hat trick. Friebe scored twice in the first half to give the Tigers a 2-0 lead and added a late insurance goal to help seal the win. It was Princeton's first hat trick since Kirsty Hale recorded one against Boston University last season.
"Melanie is playing outstanding hockey right now," coach Beth Bozman said. "She has been very steady, and she is really helping everybody. She is making a difference with the team. Ilvy played like we always thought she could. She came into her own this weekend. She felt like she finally stepped up and played her game."
Princeton travels to Old Dominion for a rematch on Sunday of the 1998 NCAA championship game.
