Philadelphia,Pa, - For the Princeton women's soccer team, hopes of its first NCAA tournament berth may have to wait until the turn of the century, as the Tigers fell to Ivy foe Pennsylvania 1-0 this afternoon at Rhodes Field.Pennsylvania forward Andrea Callaghan scored from about 20 yards out with less than five minutes remaining in the first half, which proved to be the game winner.
With the loss Princeton falls to 12-4-1 overall, 4-2-1 in the Ivy League. With the NCAA selections on Sunday night, the Tigers are holding on to an outside shot of an at-large bid. The Quakers improve to 13-3-1 and claim sole possession of second place in the Ivy League with a 6-1-0 mark.
Princeton maintained possession for much of the game and held a 10-9 advantage in shots, but could not capitalize on scoring opportunities in the box. One ofthe Tigers' best scoring chances came with just under 15 minutes to play in the game, when junior Blair Smith (Reston, Va.) chipped a ball from 25 yards out. The ball slipped right under the crossbar, where Quaker keeper Katherine Hunt made a nice save to keep Princeton off the board.
Callaghan made a nice move around Princeton defender Jenny Lankford (Jr., Charlotte, N.C.) and fired a shot past keeper Jordan Rettig (Jr., West Hartford, Conn.) into the top right corner of the net.
The game marked the regular season finale for three seniors, Dana DeCore (Pennington, N.J.), Susan Rea (Palo Alto, Calif.) and Tricia Murray (Farmington, Conn.)
