PRINCETON, N.J - After a 1-0 loss to Pennsylvania on Saturday, the Princeton women's soccer team held on to a slim hope that the 1999 season had at least one more game to be played. That hope became a reality, as the Tigers received an at-large bid to the NCAA women's soccer championship by the selection committee on Sunday night. In the program's third NCAA appearance and first since 1983, Princeton will travel to the University of Hartford for a first round game on Wednesday, November 10. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
The Tigers finished the regular season with a 12-4-1 overall record, and claimed third place in the Ivy League with a 4-2-1 mark. Princeton is one of four Ivy teams to make the championship. Harvard, who won the league crown, took the automatic bid, while Dartmouth and Pennsylvania received at-large berths. Two of Princeton's four losses came during the league season, against Harvard (1-0 OT) and Pennsylvania (1-0). Clemson and Furman, who are responsible for the Tigers' other two losses, are also participating the tournament.
Hartford enters the championship with a 15-4-2 overall record, while posting a 9-0-0 mark in the America East conference. The Hawks went 1-1-1 against mutual opponents, posting a 2-1 win over Yale, dropping a 1-0 contest to Dartmouth and tying Ivy champion Harvard 1-1.
The winner of the first round game will travel to Gainesville to take on the 1998 national champion Florida Gators on Saturday, Nov. 13.
Princeton is 1-2 in NCAA competition, with a 1-0 win over George Mason in the opening round of the 1982 tournament, followed by a 4-0 loss to North Carolina in the second round. In 1983 the Tigers lost to Boston College 2-0 in the first round. This will be the first meeting between Princeton and Hartford.
