PRINCETON, N.J. - With overtime looming only seconds away, Molly O'Malley (Sr., Tunkhannock, Pa.) recovered a deflection from Maryland goalkeeper Angela Platt and buried a game-winner into the right corner of the net with 39 seconds remaining, giving No. 4 Princeton a 1-0 win over No. 8 Maryland.
On a play that was originally started by a pass from back Brooke Doherty (Sr., Haverford, Pa.), Kirsty Hale (Sr., Virginia Beach, Va.) took the original shot on net, which Platt deflected to the right side.
"I had time," O'Malley said of her sixth goal of the season. "I had to wait until the ball deadened a bit. That was my only concern, but I had a clear shot."
Although they didn't shoot often, the Terrapins took three solid shots on net. Once again, goalkeeper Meg DeJong (Sr., Tinton Falls, N.J.) was up to the challenge. She turned away all three for her sixth win of the season and her fifth shutout. She has the best goals against average (0.17) and save percentage (.962) of any keeper in the nation.
Princeton will battle another top-20 opponent when it travels to Yale, currently ranked 18th, on Saturday at 12:30 p.m for an Ivy-League showdown. Princeton is 2-0 in the league and is looking to defend its four consecutive conference crowns.
