WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. - Sophomore midfielder Lauren Pachucki (Warren, NJ/Watchung Hills) scored two goals and Kristen McDermott (Atlantic Highlands, NJ/Middletown North) added a goal and two assists as Monmouth University (9-10-1) closed out its regular season with a 4-1 victory over Princeton University (9-7) today at Kessler Field.
Christine Chrisanthon (Media, PA/Penncrest), the Northeast Conference's Newcomer of the Week, had a goal and an assist for the Hawks, who will face top seed and defending champion Central Connecticut in the first round of the 1998 NEC Championship on Friday. Monmouth is the fourth seed in the tournament.
Chrisanthon put the Hawks on the board early as she took a crossing pass from McDermott and drilled a low-lining left footer into the net past Tigers' netminder Jonna Iacono (Wyckoff, NJ/Ramapo Regional). Pachucki extended the lead to 2-0 as she chipped a pass from McDermott past Iacono at the 19:04 mark and made it a three-goal margin as she beat Iacono again off a pass from Chrisanthon. McDermott closed out Monmouth's scoring on a penalty kick with 29:14 remaining in the match.
Tanya Kalivas (So., Franklin Lakes, NJ) scored the lone Princeton goal as she beat backup goalkeeper Kristen Spohn (Parsippany, NJ/Parsippany Hills) with 3:28 to play. Spohn stopped two shots after replacing Lori Houlihan (Greenwood Lake, NY/Tuxedo), who made 10 saves before departing in the 68th minute. Iacono made one save for the Tigers, who outshot the Hawks, 22-7, including a 14-2 margin in the second half.
Princeton hopes to break at five-game losing streak as they host Pennsylvania in the season finale on Friday, Nov. 6th, at Lourie-Love Field. Game time is set for 7:30 pm
