Field Hockey Gets Back On Track With Second-Straight Win

PRINCETON, N.J. - Senior attack Hilary Matson (Marathon, N.Y.) led the Tigers to a 5-2 win over Duke University on Sunday afternoon with two consecutive goals in the first half of play, giving her team a comfortable 4-0 lead going into halftime.
Matson now owns 35 goals and 32 assists in her career and moves into third-place on the all-time career points list with 102. She surpassed 1999 graduate, Molly O'Malley who registered 101 points (41 goals, 19 assists) during her stay at Princeton.
Melanie Meerschwam (Amstelveen, Netherlands) started things off for the Tigers, scoring an unassisted goal at 30:25 in the first half, and then fed an assist to Emily Townsend (Houston, Texas) for the second Princeton goal of the game at 22:11. Matson finished the scoring in the first period as she deflected a ball from freshman Cory Picketts (Marmora, N.J.) into the cage at 13:02, and then scored an unassisted goal with :39 seconds remaining on the clock. Ilvy Friebe (Bonn, Germany) broke out of an eight-game scoring drought to notch her second goal of the season 4:51 into the second half to put the Tigers up 5-0 before Duke staged an offensive rally for two goals.
Melissa Yuppa (Fairfield, N.J.) scored Duke's first goal at the 20:05 mark of the second half on a corner play assisted by Courtney Sommer (Tulsa, Okla.). Kim Gogola (Whitehouse Station, N.J.) added the only other offensive contribution for the Blue Devils with 14:28 remaining in the game off of an assist from Jennelle Moore (East Harwich, Mass.).
Tiger goalkeeper Kelly Baril (Peabody, Mass.) held Duke scoreless in the first half and made six saves in the game, allowing both Duke goals. Blue Devil keeper Erica Perrier (St. Lambert, Quebec) made seven saves and allowed five goals.
Princeton is currently ranked No. 7 in the NFHCA coaches' poll and raises its record to 7-3, as Duke falls to 5-10 on the year.
Princeton will host Delaware on Wednesday, Oct. 18 at Class of 1952 Stadium for a 7:00 p.m. start.
