Field Hockey Players Earn Regional Honors

PRINCETON, N.J. - The Princeton field hockey team placed nine players in all on the 2000 Astro Turf/NFHCA Division I Regional All-American list. Four players were honored as first-team selections, while five took second-team honors.
First team selections include senior co-captains Hilary Matson (Marathon, N.Y.) and Melanie Meerschwam (Amstelveen, Netherlands) along with sophomores Kelly Baril (Peabody, Mass.) and Emily Townsend (Houston, Texas).
Matson finished the season first on the team with 16 goals and 15 assists for 47 points. She was selected the 2000 Ivy League Player of the Year and finished her career at Princeton third in career points (122) and second in career assists (38). Meerschwam ended the season as a unanimous first-team All-Ivy selection with nine goals and 11 assists for 29 points. In her career she amassed 89 points on 35 goals and 19 assists. Her point total places her fourth on the all-time career points list. Baril started every game in goal this season, playing all but 20 minutes. She allowed 20 goals in 18 games (1250 minutes) and holds a 1.12 goals against average and a .829 save percentage, making 97 saves. She also posted seven shutouts throughout the course of the 2000 season giving her 11 shutouts in her two-year career. Townsend finished the year third on the team with 23 points, scoring 10 goals and handing out three assists as a defender, she also collected a team-leading five defensive saves. She has a total of 17 goals and seven assists in her two-year career for a total of 41 points. Seniors Anastasia Nowacki (Winnetka, Ill) and Kellie Maul (Marlton, N.J.), along with sophomore Ilvy Friebe (Bonn, Germany) and freshman Cory Picketts (Marmora, N.J.) and Claire Miller (Scarsdale, N.Y.) took second-team honors.
Nowacki anchored the Princeton defense this season at back. Though she didn't crack the points column or collect a single defensive save, she is noted to have kept every right-wing she defended scoreless this season while on the field. Maul finished the season fourth on the team with 22 points on five goals and 12 assists and finished her career with 13 goals, 21 assists and 47 points. Friebe scored 13 points on five goals and three assists this season at attack.
Picketts and Miller claimed second-team honors in their first season of collegiate hockey. Picketts finished her first season fifth in scoring with 19 points on eight goals and three assists as a defender. Miller, the 2000 Ivy League Rookie of the Year was right behind Picketts with 18 points on nine goals.
The Tigers have completed their season with a 14-4 record, losing in the second round of the Division I NCAA tournament to defending National Champion Maryland 3-1. The team won it's seventh-consecutive Ivy League Championship with a perfect 7-0 record.
