Madison, Wis. - Wisconsin and Princeton squared off in Madison, Wis. to begin the NCAA tournament on Wednesday afternoon. There was a great flow to the game as both teams played solidly in this contest, which would not be decided until the second overtime period. Wisconsin would score the game-winning goal in the 117th minute as a result of a nice corner kick and traffic in front of Princeton's goalie, Jordan Rettig. Rettig came out to intercept the cross, but Wisconsin's Natalie Roedler redirected the ball with her toe into the net.
"It was as exciting as it could've been, and it was a well played game," said Princeton head coach Julie Shackford. When you go into double overtime the little things are important. I think the team played great, and it could've gone either way. There's nothing that I would change about the way we played."
Seniors Julie Shaner and Rettig played well in defeat as Shaner had four shots and Rettig made four saves. Freshman Theresa Sherry also had a solid game.
While the loss was a disappointing way for Princeton to end the season, Shackford is very proud of her team's tremendous accomplishments this season.
"This is our second year in the tournament, and we're getting closer every year, " added Shackford. Hopefully the underclassmen will bring this kind of energy into 2001."
Last season the Tigers lost 2-1 at Hartford in the first round of the NCAA tournament.
