IC4A & ECAC Track and Field Championships Arrive at Princeton
May 17, 2000 | Men's Track and Field
May 17, 2000
PRINCETON, N.J. - College track and field's largest championship will be contested for four days beginning Thursday, May 18, at the new state-of-the-art William Weaver Stadium track and field facility at Princeton University.
The 124th Intercollegiate Association of Amateur Athletes of America (IC4A), the country's oldest men's collegiate track championship, will be held jointly with the 17th ECAC Division I Women's title meet at Princeton. The women's championship moves to Princeton after six successive years at George Mason University in Fairfax, Virginia.
Princeton will be the host of the Outdoor IC4A for the first time since 1982 when it was held on their old Palmer Stadium track. The Tigers' Jadwin Gym has been the site of the Indoor IC4A Championship 23 times from 1971 to 1997.
The IC4A battle shapes up as a multi-way contest between defending Indoor and Outdoor Champ Georgetown, who last week finished third at the Big East Outdoor Championship, behind rivals Notre Dame, and Connecticut. Virginia Tech, the dominant Atlantic-10 champ and runner-up in this year's Indoor IC4A, Army, the Patriot League titlist, as well as Princeton, a traditional Heptagonal Champ look to give Georgetown a battle. Penn State, a long-time contender for team honors, will be absent as they are competing at the Big Ten Championship. Eighty-four of the 103 IC4A member schools have entered a record total of 1,547 individuals in the 22 championship events. Among the entrants are an unprecedented number of eleven defending champions, led by Maurice Wignall of George Mason. Wignall is a three-time Outdoor Long Jump titlist (1997, 1998. 1999), a two-time Outdoor 110m hurdles champ (1997 & 1999), the 2000 IC4A Indoor 60m hurdles champ and long jump runner-up as well as the 1999 NCAA Indoor long jump champion.
Another many-time gold medalist seeking to repeat is two-time double-sprint titlist Andre Davis of Virginia Tech., Davis, the 1999 100m and 200m champion, also won the 2000 Indoor 60m and 200m titles at Harvard this past March.
Other two-time Outdoor champions looking to retain titles won in 1998 and 1999 are Connecticut's Ray Wilks in the Shot Put and Virginia Tech's Erick Kingston in the hammer throw. However, both were vanquished in their respective events at the 2000 Indoor meet. Princeton's Scott Denbo won the shot put and Manhattan's frosh Thomas "Jacob" Freeman, who was Track & Field News' 1999 USA High School "Athlete of the Year", captured the 35-lb.weight throw.
One-time '99 defenders are Liberty's Mike Decker in the 400m, Brown's Trinity Gray in the 800m, William & Mary's Ted Gillick in the 3,000m steeplechase, Georgetown's Eric Savoth in the 5,000m, Virgina Tech's Brian Hunter in the pole vault, UMass-Amherst's Vic Morency in the discus throw, and Liberty's James Johnson in the decathlon. Grey may "sit-out" the IC4As to concentrate on the upcoming NCAA Division I Championships at Duke University, May 31-June 3.
Seventy of the 82 ECAC Division I Women's schools have entered 1,196 individuals in the 22 scoring events, which now includes the pole vault.
The ECAC defending team titlist is George Mason, who edged out Pittsburgh by one point, 67-66 a year ago. West Virginia (58) was third followed by Syracuse (54) in fourth, Seton Hall (46) was fifth and Georgetown (45) sixth. These teams are all potential contenders for this year's crown, along with a resurgent Villanova, who last week re-captured the Big East title over Miami (FL) by a score of 118-103.
Among the entrants are ten individual champions in eleven events, led by double-winner, Syracuse's Cherre Hicks in the shot put and discus throw. Hicks set a meet and ECAC record of 199-8 in the discus last year.
Another returning 1999 victor is Villanova's Carrie Tollefson, who won the 1,500m as she did in 1997. Tollefson also won the 3,000 m title at the 1999 Indoor and Outdoor as well as the 2000 Indoor and NCAA Championships.
Other 1999 Outdoor ECAC titlists back to defend are West Virginia's Tameca Williams in the 400m, Pittsburgh's Chantee Earl in the 800m. Earl set an ECAC Indoor record of 2:02.19 in winning the 2000 Indoor NCAA title in the 800m. Also looking to defend titles are Georgetown's Kristen Gordon in the 3,000m, West Virginia's Stacian Brown in the 100m hurdles. Others to watch include Villanova's Charmaine Walker, the 1998 champion in the 100m hurdles, and Harvard's Dora Gyorffy the ECAC indoor record holder in the high jump at 6-5 *, Harvard's Brenda Taylor in the 400m hurdles along with Duke's Jillian Schwartz in the pole vault and Brown's Lindsay Taylor in the Heptathlon.
