Princeton Women's Soccer Defeats George Washington In Season Home Opener

PRINCETON, N.J. - Freshman Theresa Sherry really got her juices flowing just seconds before the start of Princeton's women's soccer game against George Washington as the last minute replacement to sing the national anthem. Sherry then heated it up on the field scoring two goals in the first half and assisting on the final goal in the season opener at Lourie-Love Field. Sophomore Heather Deerin was also hot as she started off the Princeton attack with a penalty kick and later added two assists as the Tigers beat GW 6-0.

"Singing the anthem made me more excited," said Sherry, "When I got out there I was even more excited to play. I'm just happy to be a part of this team. I'm glad that I could contribute. I think it was important for us to come out big. This set the bar and I think we will work to keep raising it."

Alex Fiore scored on an assist from Deerin to begin the second half putting the Tigers up 4-0. Then Tanya Kalivas and Liz Patrick scored within a minute of each other late in the second half. Princeton's offense recorded 30 shots to George Washington's four and Jordan Retting made just two saves.

"I thought we played really well and kept the ball moving," said coach Julie Shackford. "We were hard to defend the whole game and Heather's early penalty kick really helped us to get the momentum going."

Princeton returns to action Friday, Sept. 8 against Seton Hall at Lourie-Love Field.
