PRINCETON, N.J. - Hilary Matson (Marathon, N.Y.) and the rest of her Tiger teammates left little wondering what type of field hockey team Princeton University is in the Ivy League.
After a disappointing 3-1 win over Columbia in their most recent Ivy game, the Tigers set out to make a statement in the Ivy League. Matson added the exclamation point to that statement by scoring a hat trick in the second-half to lead her team to a 5-0 win over Dartmouth at Class of 1952 Stadium on Saturday. All three goals were registered in a span of 2:09.
Matson's first goal came with 9:19 remaining in the game off of an assist from Melanie Meerschwam (Amstelveen, Netherlands). Meerschwam found Matson in similar fashion at 7:47 to put Princeton ahead 4-0. The fifth and final Tiger goal was Matson once again, unassisted at 7:10.
To start the game, Princeton was unable to find the net until 1:18 remaining in the first half, when freshman Claire Miller (Scarsdale, N.Y.) found an opening in the cage after receiving a pass from Meerschwam. With 10 seconds remaining Aviva Meerschwam (Amstelveen , Netherlands) connected on an arial play set up off of a Princeton corner. Matson and Kellie Maul (Marlton, N.J.) were credited with the double-assist, and the Tigers took a 2-0 lead into halftime. Goalkeeper Kelly Baril (Peabody, Mass.) earned her third shutout of the season for the Tigers making three saves. Opposing goalie Brittany D'Augustine (Auburn, Maine) took in 13 saves for the Big Green.
Princeton (5-0, 3-0 Ivy) will take a few days off before hosting defending National Champion Maryland on Friday, Sept. 29 at 7 p.m. Maryland is currently ranked No. 1 in the National Field Hockey Coaches Association poll, while Princeton stands at No. 11.
