Princeton, N.J. - Krista Ariss (Jr., Unionville, Ontario) put the Tigers up 1-0 at 34:23 when she scored her third goal of the season. Princeton held the lead for the remainder of the game as the Tigers defeated the Wildcats of Villanova 1-0 on wind-swept Lourie-Love field. Princeton moves to 9-1-1 on the season, 3-0 against Ivy competition. Villanova slips to 8-3-3, 2-2-2 in the Big East.
Play was fairly even in the first half as Princeton registered seven shots and Villanova took four shots. Senior Princeton goalie, Catherine Glenn (Jacksonville, Fla.) made a spectacular save in the 17th minute when Villanova's Quinn Sellers, the Wildcats' leading scorer, ripped a shot from several yards inside the box. Diving to her right, Glenn deflected the shot past the right side goal post keeping the game even. Ariss put the Tigers on the scoreboard when she took a cross from Janine Willis (Fr. Burlington, Ontario) and headed it into the top right corner of the net. Willis carried the ball deep into the left side of Villanova's box, turned and hit a lofting cross to the far side of the goal. As Wildcat keeper, Janel Schillig came out, Ariss positioned herself in front of her defender and headed the ball into the goal.
Minutes into the second half, Villanova's Elizabeth Dauble get her head on a corner kick cross that hit the far side post. Schillig had a great save in the 50th minute when Princeton Joan Cundey (Jr., Bay Village, Ohio) broke free and got a one-v-one shot off.
"We played very well in the first half," says head coach Julie Shackford. " We continued the momentum into the first 15 minutes of the second half. Villanova battled back and we lost a bit of our intensity. This gives us something to work on for the upcoming weekend."
Princeton will travel to Harvard on Saturday, October 20 to take on the Crimson at noon. Princeton and Harvard are both 3-0 against Ivy League opponents, and share first place in the league standings.
"The team is confident, and we'll be ready," says Shackford.
