Negron Scores OT Game Winner - Women's Soccer Tops Harvard 2-1

Cambridge, Mass. - Esmeralda Negron's (Fr. Harrington Park, N.J.) overtime goal at 101:01 lifted the Tigers past the Crimson of Harvard as the two teams battled for sole possession of first place in the Ivy League. Entering today's match Princeton and Harvard were both 3-0 against league opponents. With the victory, Princeton moves to 10-1-1 on the season, 4-0 against league competition. Harvard, who was ranked as high as 10 in some national polls this week, slips to 8-2, 3-1 against Ivy League opponents.
The game remained scoreless through the first half. Lynn Ariss (Jr. Unionville, Ont.) put the Tigers up 1-0 in the second half when she scored off a corner kick in the 49th minute. Linley Gober (Sr. Atlanta, Ga.) was credited with the assist. Ariss' goal in the game is not only her first goal in the 2001 season, it is also her first Princeton career goal. Princeton held the lead late into the game, but Harvard evened the score in the last four minutes, when Joey Yenne scored for the Crimson at 84:09.
Negron scored her fourth goal of the season, with three minutes remaining in the first overtime period to give the Tigers the victory, Positioned well in front of the net, Negron got her foot on the cross from Elizabeth Patrick (Jr. Oakton, Va.) to score the golden-goal and give the Tigers the overtime victory.
Harvard out-shot the Tigers, 21-4 while senior Tiger goalie Catherine Glenn (Sr. Jacksonville, Fla.) registered 5 saves.
With an undefeated 4-0 league record, the Tigers stand-alone in first place of the Ivy League, last season, the Tigers shared the league title with Dartmouth. This is the first time in head coach Julie Shackford's career that she has beaten Harvard. "It's been a long time coming," says Shackford.
"I think that nerves kept us from playing our best in the first half," says Shackford, "We made some adjustments in the second half that enabled us to do well and it paid off."
With five games remaining in the regular season, Princeton has yet to face several Ivy opponents including Cornell, UPenn, and Yale. Princeton returns to competition on October 27 when they host Big Red of Cornell at 4 p.m.
