Princeton, N.J. - Krista Ariss' (Jr. Unioville, Ont.) blast from 25 yards out, in the remaining two minutes of the game, broke a scoreless tie to lead the Tigers to a 1-0 victory over the Big Red of Cornell. Princeton moves to 11-1-1 on the season and maintains an undefeated record against Ivy League opponents that currently stands at 5-0. Cornell slips to 3-6-3 and 1-3-1 in the league.
Princeton out shot Cornell 30-6 in the game yet was unable to put the ball into the back of the net for the majority of the match. In the 35th minute of the game, freshman Esmeralda Negron (Harrington Park, N.J.) had a shot that bounced off the crossbar and out of the goal. Early in the second half, Theresa Sherry's (So. Baltimore, Md.) shot was cleared off the goal line by a back-tracking Cornell defender. Sherry finished the game taking four shots. Both Rochelle Willis (Fr. Burlington, Ont.) and Ariss registered six shots in the match for the Tigers. Ariss gave Princeton the lead with 1:26 remaining in the game when from nearly 25 yards out she hit a ball towards the top left corner of the goal. Cornell's keeper, Katie Thomas was able to get a hand on the ball as it squeezed in beneath the crossbar. Ariss has scored four goals this season, two of which have been game-winners. Thomas registered thirteen saves in the match and held the Tigers scoreless for 88:34 minutes.
Princeton keeper, Catherine Glenn (Sr. Jacksonville, Fla.) registered three saves in the match and picks up her seventh shutout of the season. Princeton has outscored their opponents 28-6. Heather Deerin (Jr. Livingston, N.J.) and Brea Griffiths (Fr. Burlington, Ont.) have teamed up as the central backs in every game except in the William and Mary match on October 10 when Griffiths missed the game due to injury.
"We played well, but had some trouble finishing." says head coach Julie Shackford. "We are thrilled to pick up the victory and look forward to a good match against American."
Princeton will host American on Wednesday, October 31 at 7:30 p.m on Lourie-Love Field.
