Princeton, N.J. - Sophomore Gretchen Anderson (Natick, Mass.) scored four goals and added and assist as the Princeton women's hockey team kicked off the 2001-02 season with a 7-2 win over the North York Junior Aeros in and exhibition on Sunday afternoon at Baker Rink.
Freshman Katharine Maglione (Fayetteville, N.Y.) kicked off the scoring for the Tigers at 10:31 of the first period. Anderson won a face off in the right circle back to Maglione who fired the puck from the point and found the back of the net for a 1-0 Princeton lead. Anderson added a shorthanded wrap around goal at 12:13 to give the Tigers a 2-0 lead heading into the first intermission.
Anderson's second score of the afternoon was an unassisted four-on-four goal at 1:36 of the second period. Princeton tooka 4-0 lead when senior assistant captain Jessica Fedderly collected the rebound off a sophomore Lisa Rasmussen (Washington, D.C.) shot that got away from Junior Aeros goaltender Aleisha Lusk, and slipped it into the goal at 8:42 for a 4-0 Tigers lead. Princeton netminder Sarah Ahlquist (South St. Paul, Minn.), a junior, lost her bid for a shutout at 10:32 of the second period when Ashley Stewart scored a power play goal to put the Junior Aeros on the board. Kelly Law and Diana Cholakov assisted on the play.
North York cut the lead to 4-2 with a goal from Nikki Eckiebrecht off of assists from Law and Cholakov at the eight minute mark of the third period. That was as close as it would get as Princeton scored three straight goals to close out the 7-2 win.
Rasmussen scored the Tigers' fifth goal at 15:27 with assists from freshmen Susan Hobson (Mississauga, Ont.) and April Brown (Savage, Minn.). Anderson's third goal of the day came at 18:43 with assists from sophomore Sarah Fox (Grosse Point Farms, Mich.) and Brown before adding an empty-netter at 19:10 to provide the final 7-2 margin. Fox and sophomore Angela Gooldy (New Hartford, N.Y.) assisted on the final goal.
Ahlquist finished with 16 saves between the pipes for the Orange and Black. Aleisha Lusk had 12 saves and allwed four goals in her 29:09. Flora Vineberg finished with 11 saves and three goals against in the final 30:51 in the net for the Junior Aeros.
Princeton will kick off its regular season when it hosts Mercyhurst at Baker Rink at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 3 and at 1 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 4.
