Philadelphia, Pa. - Junior Ilvy Friebe (Bonn, Germany) had two goals and an assist to help the seventh-ranked Princeton field hockey team capture their eighth-straight Ivy League Championship and the accompanying automatic berth into the 2001 NCAA tournament with a 6-1 win over Pennsylvania Friday night at Franklin Field. The Tigers have dominated the league over the past eight years and are now 52-1 against Ivy opponents since 1994.
"This was our number one goal from the start of the season," said head coach Beth Bozman. "I think that this gets harder every year and it was a great accomplishment for this team to put everything together out on the field and take the title. Now we are just waiting to find out about our second goal of the season." Pennsylvania jumped out to an early 1-0 lead when senior Aparna Wilder put the Quakers ahead with a goal at 32:20 of the first half off of an assist from Monique Horshaw.
The lead did not last long as Friebe scored a diving goal as she deflected a pass from junior Rachael Becker (Broomall, Pa.) past Quaker goalie Carrie Wilhelm at 25:12 to tie the game at 1-1.
Freshman Natalie Martirosian (Richmond, Va.) put the Tigers ahead for good less then a minute later with the eventual game-winner at 24:19. Sophomore Claire Miller (Scarsdale, N.Y.) took a free hit just outside the circle and fired a perfect pass to Martirosian, who collected the ball and was able to get it past Wilhelm for a 2-1 Princeton lead.
The Tigers added to that lead with an unassisted goal from sophomore Cory Picketts (Marmora, N.J.) at 11:48. Miller then gave Princeton a 4-1 lead going into the intermission when she was able to stickhandle through the Pennsylvania defense and fire a shot into the back of the cage.
The Orange and Black came flying out of the gates after the intermission as Friebe scored her second goal of the night just 28 seconds into the second half for a 5-1 Princeton lead.
Junior co-captain Emily Townsend (Houston, Texas) provided the icing on the cake for the Tigers when she scored on a penalty corner with 28:55 remaining in the contest. Friebe had the initial push and Miller provided the stick stop on the play as Townsend blasted a shot into the back of the cage to provide the final 6-1 margin.
Junior co-captain Kelly Baril (Peabody, Mass.) played the first 46:52 in the cage for Princeton, allowing one goal. Classmate Zehra Nizami (Hong Kong) came on and closed out the game for the Tigers, finishing with no saves. Wilhelm finished with nine saves in goal for the Quakers.
The Tigers will find out who is next up on their schedule when the field for the 2001 NCAA championships is announced on Tuesday night at 8 p.m.
