Brooklyn Heights, N.Y. - Junior guard Allison Cahill broke a 40-40 tie with a steal and a three-pointer that put Princeton ahead for good in its 89-80 win over St. Francis in Brooklyn, N.Y. on Tuesday night. The Tigers, now 2-0, match last season's win total with a new up-tempo approach that has them averaging 82.5 points per game.
Princeton built an early 13-4 lead four minutes into the contest, but St. Francis responded with a 16-0 run and led 20-13 at the 13:13 mark of the first half. Junior Maureen Lane connected on two straight three-pointers to tie things up at 34-34 with 4:20 left in the first period. Cahill's three-pointer gave Princeton the ultimate lead and her four points to end the half made the score 49-42 at the intermission. "I felt like we were definitely in a rhythm today," says Cahill. "People were open, they hit shots and we were able to use St. Francis' aggressiveness against them. It felt good."
Cahill finished the game with 17 points and a career high seven assists. Her previous best was four assists at Pennsylvania last season. Sophomore Jessica Aitken also registered a career high with 10 points. Aitken scored eight in the season opener against Lehigh and was able to score eight straight in a 2:49 stretch that had Princeton leading 80-67 with 3:46 left to go in tonight's game.
The Tigers shot 56 percent from the field and made 4 of 6 three-point attempts in the first half. Princeton finished 5 of 11 from behind the arc on the night and held St. Francis to a 39 field-goal percentage. Lane led the team with 20 points, Cahill finished second with 17 while freshman Karen Bolster followed her 24-point performance against Lehigh with 13 points against St. Francis.
"We had a very strong team effort today," says Head Coach Richard Barron. "Each person made big plays with either a key rebound or a key basket. St. Francis is a quick team and we were able to capitalize on the opportunities they presented us."
St. Francis falls to 1-1 on the year and Princeton, 2-25 last season under interim coach Kevin Morris, improves to 2-0 under Barron. The Tigers head West this weekend to play in the Seattle Times Husky Classic in Seattle, Wash. Princeton will face Santa Clara on Friday, Nov. 23 at 9 p.m. Eastern and play either Northeastern or Washington on Saturday, Nov. 24.
