Seattle, Wash. -
Despite senior Lauren Rigney's career high 20 points, Princeton lost its first contest of the season on Friday night. The Tigers fell 80-52 to Santa Clara at the Seattle Times Husky Classic at Bank of America Arena on the University of Washington campus.
Rigney opened the scoring with a three-point basket giving Princeton an early 3-0 lead. The Broncos answered with a barrage of three pointers and led 21-7 when the arena lights went out - literally. Play was stopped for about eight minutes and Princeton never regained its composure, shooting 28 percent from the field and 20 percent from beyond the arc.
"Lauren Rigney gave us a great game," says Princeton Coach Richard Barron. "But obviously we were not ready and we were not focused. This was a lesson we needed to learn. There was a point in the second half were we made some runs, but even then we missed a dozen or so free throws. You cannot miss free throws and layups and expect to beat good teams." Santa Clara brought a balanced attack with four players leading the way with 10 points. Julie Butler, Kendra Rhea, Kayla Huss and Jennie Rondel each finished with 10 points for the Broncos.
Junior Maureen Lane ended the game with six points, an assist and a turnover in her homecoming. Lane, a Seattle native, scored all six points on two three-point baskets. Lauren Goldbeck and Kelly Schaeffer also chipped in with six points for Princeton.
The Tigers fall to 2-1 on the season as Santa Clara improves to 2-1. Princeton will play in the tournament consolation game at 9 p.m. Eastern. They will face the loser of tonight's Northeastern vs. Washington contest.
