Seattle, Wash. -
After leading for almost the entire game, the Princeton women's basketball team found itself down 79-78 late in Saturday night's game vs. Northeastern. That's when Allison Cahill split two defenders and put up a jump shot that fell with 22.2 seconds remaining, giving Princeton an 81-80 lead. Lauren Rigney hit a free throw and the Tigers earned an 82-80 win at the Seattle Times Husky Classic on the University of Washington campus.
Four different Princeton players finished with double-digit scoring performances. Freshman Karen Bolster came off the bench and hit 4 of 6 three pointers, leading all scorers with 20 points. Cahill ended the game with 17 points while both Rigney and Kelly Schaeffer finished with 16. Schaeffer's 16 points doubles her previous career high of eight set earlier this season against Lehigh. She also finished with a career best five assists. Princeton shot 52 percent from the field and 50 percent from three-point range in the first half and led 45-31 at the intermission. Northeastern made their run in the second half behind Melissa Kowalski, who scored 13 of her team-high 19 points in the second period.
The Tigers held on in large part to second-half free throw shooting, a problem early on this season. After making only 14 of 23 attempts in the first half, the Tigers connected on 12 of 14 free throws, including their first nine to start the second half.
Princeton improves to 3-1 on the season, eclipsing last season's win total of two. The Tigers return to the East Coast when they play at Delaware next Saturday, Dec. 1.
