Princeton To Host Opening Rounds of 2001 NCAA Field Hockey Championships

PRINCETON, N.J. - Princeton University has been selected as one of four sites that will host the first- and second-round games of the 2001 NCAA Division I Field Hockey Championship, as was announced by the NCAA Division I Field Hockey Committee on Tuesday night. The University of Maryland (17-3), Wake Forest University (13-4) and the University of Michigan (14-5) will also host the opening rounds. Those games will be played on Nov. 10-11.
The Tigers (15-2), who received an automatic bid into the championships by virtue of their eighth-straight Ivy League title, will face Northeastern (16-6) in the opening round of the tournament. The Orange and Black handed the Huskies a 4-2 loss back on Sept. 7 to open the season. Top-ranked Old Dominion University (17-4) and the University of Massachusetts (11-9) comprise the other half of Princeton's bracket. The Lady Monarchs defeated the University of North Carolina, 3-1, in last year's championship game. The University of Maryland (17-3), Wake Forest University (13-4), and the University of North Carolina (14-6), round out the top four teams.
A total of 16 teams were selected to the tournament. Eight teams received at-large bids, seven conferences were granted automatic qualifications and one team received a berth by way of a play-in game.
The seven conferences that received automatic qualifications are: America East Conference, Atlantic 10 Conference, Big East Conference, Big Ten Conference, Ivy Group, Mid-American Conference, and the Patriot League.
The remaining eight teams, in no particular order are: Michigan State University (15-5), Kent State University (13-7), Ohio University (16-4), University of Virginia (13-7), Ohio State University (15-4), Fairfield University (11-10), and Syracuse University (15-3). The University of California, Berkeley (13-4) captured a berth by way of a play-in game
The Division I Field Hockey semi-finals and finals will be played on November 16 and 18 at Kent State University in Kent, Ohio.
