Princeton (2-0), back in action for the first time in ten days, defeated the Lehigh Mountain Hawks 6-0 tonight on Lourie-Love Field. The Tigers used a scoring binge late in the first half to take control on the game and continued to up the score after halftime. Princeton controlled the pace of the game, and Lehigh had no answer for Princeton's pressure, landing only four shots to Princeton's 25.
Kristina Fontanez, a freshman, led the Tigers with two goals. Fontanez netted her first goal with under two minutes to play in the first half to run the score to 4-0, completely deflating the Mountain Hawks (2-4) as they entered the halftime break. Fontanez then capped the scoring with a shot that trickled through the goalie's legs in the 78th minute.
Alex Fiore got the Tigers on the board in the 17th minute, leaping up to reach a long cross from freshman Rochelle Willis. The ball sailed over the Lehigh keeper Marissa Williams' outstretched arms. Willis added a goal 15 minutes later, again finishing a cross strongly into the back of the net for the Tigers. Krista Ariss and Therea Sherry also scored for Princeton. The play of Fontanez and Willis is just one reason Coach Julie Shackford is excited about her young team's prospects. Brea Griffiths' aggressive play on defense helped anchor the Tigers from the sweeper position, and the Tigers received solid offensive contributions from Esmeralda Negron. Jean Poster, the Tigers' goalie of the future, came in for Catherine Glenn late in the second half and promptly made a stunning save. And Janine Willis, the Tigers' most highly touted freshman, was in action for Team Canada in international play.
"We heard that we are one of the top 25 freshman classes in country, and we are out to prove it the moment we step on the field." Fontanez said after the game. Shackford looks forward to the development of her team and has her sights set high. "They are going to be really, really good. We have a tough stretch of games coming, but it feels good to win a game like this in this fashion."
Last season the Tigers outshot the Mountain Hawks in a similar fashion, 27-4, but finished only two in winning 2-0.
The Tigers' next game is against Dartmouth in Hanover, rescheduled to September 23.
