Esmeralda Negron's goal at 7:53 of overtime gave the 18th-ranked Princeton women's soccer team a tough 2-1 win over Pennsylvania at Lourie-Love Field Saturday night.
Negron's goal came after Liz Bell hit the bottom of the crossbar on a free kick from 25 yards out. Penn goalkeeper Vanessa Scotto, who played a great game, knocked the ball off the goal line and right to Negron, who drilled it home.
Negron now has four game-winning goals on the season, including two in overtime. She leads the Tigers with seven goals.
"The keeper hit it, and I got the rebound," Negron said. "It was on the line, and I just hit it in."
Princeton improved to 11-0-0 overall and 4-0-0 in the Ivy League. The Tigers remained one of two undefeated, untied teams in the country, along with UTEP, who plays at Fresno State Sunday. Penn slipped to 5-5-1, 1-1-1 in the league. "It was a good game," said Princeton coach Julie Shackford. "It's a great rivalry, and it was great to come away with a win."
Krista Ariss scored on a feed from Kelly Sosa just 5:57 into the game, and the 1-0 Princeton lead stood up until 12 minutes into the second half, when Penn's Katie Cross, the Ivy League's leading scorer, dribbled through the area and put in a left-footed shot for her 11th on the year.
Princeton had two great chances to win the game in regulation. Brea Griffiths chipped a ball past Scotto and into the net with 4:51 to play, but the officials ruled that a Princeton player had made contact with the 'keeper. Scotto then robbed Kristina Fontanez on a drive with 2:50 remaining.
Princeton outshot Penn 22-7. The Tigers are at No. 25 Villanova Wednesday.
