Sara Sedgewick headed in a corner kick from Katie Westfall with 4:42 gone in the second overtime to give Harvard a 1-0 win over No. 15 Princeton at Lourie-Love Field Saturday night.
The loss was the first blemish for the Tigers after a 12-0-0 start. Princeton had been the only undefeated, untied team in Division I women's soccer.
Harvard also prevented Princeton from clinching the Ivy League championship. Princeton would still do so with a win at Cornell next Saturday in their final Ivy game.
"It was a really good game," said Princeton coach Julie Shackford. "I thought we had better chances in the first half and they had better chances in the second half. Once you get to overtime, anything can happen. It was a very even game."
Princeton defender Heather Deerin knocked away a shot near the goal line near the end of regulation, and Brea Griffiths hit the crossbar off a feed from Deerin in the first overtime. Joey Yenne started the winning play with her shot was tipped over the goal by Princeton goalkeeper Jean Poster, who finished with nine saves. Westfall then lifted the ensuing corner kick in front of the goal, where Sedgewick headed it into the left corner. Poster had no chance on the play.
"We knew we'd have to lose sometime," said Shackford. "We still have a lot to play for. We played a good team, and it doesn't always happen for you."
