Williamsburg, Va. - Taline Tahmassian's goal four minutes into overtime gave William & Mary a 1-0 win over Princeton in a women's soccer game played in 40 degree temperatures and steady rain.
The loss was the second straight 1-0 overtime loss for Princeton (12-2-0, 5-1-0 Ivy League) after the 19th-ranked Tigers fell to Harvard Saturday night. Princeton is at Cornell Saturday (noon), and a win in that game would clinch at least a tie for the Ivy League championship and earn the Tigers the league's automatic bid to the NCAA tournament.
William & Mary improved to 13-4-1 with the win. W&M is 8-0-0 in the Colonial Athletic Association.'
The winning play began with a clear to Lydia Sturgis, who skipped the ball ahead to Tahmassian. The winning shot was a drive from 30 yards out.
Princeton outshot William & Mary 9-3. Nikki Villott made six saves in goals for the Tribe.
The loss ruined two homecomings for Princeton. Julie Shackford, the Tiger coach, was the first three-time All-America in William & Mary women's soccer history before graduating in 1988, while Princeton freshman Emily Behncke is a native of Williamsburg.
