WOMEN'S HOCKEY COMES BACK, LOSES LATE LEAD AGAINST MAINE

ORONO, ME - A five-on-three advantage is usually a good situation. Maine's Nicole Munro didn't seem to care, stealing the puck at her own blue line, taking it the length of the ice to beat Princeton goalie Sarah Ahlquist (Jr., South St. Paul, Minn.), and tying Friday night's women's hockey game at four early in the third period.
Both teams went scoreless over the final minutes of regulation and overtime. That power play collapse did not cost the Tigers in the standings, however, since Maine plays in the Eastern College Athletic Conference's eastern division while Princeton resides in the north.
Princeton (13-6-3 overall, 9-3-0 ECAC-N) found the net first when forward April Brown (Fr., Savage, Minn.) scored unassisted at 6:17 of the first, giving Princeton a 1-0 lead that held throughout the period. Maine (14-12-3 overall) woke up after that, scoring three unanswered goals in the first 3:31 of the second, including two in the first minute. Down two goals, Tiger forward Susan Hobson (So., Missassauga, Ont.) started a Princeton run of three unanswered, scoring at 6:21 of the second, assisted by forward Lisa Rasmussen (So., Washington, DC) and defender Aviva Grumet-Morris (Sr., Evanston, Ill.). Forward Gretchen Anderson (So., Natick, MA) and Hobson each added goals in the next 10:31, and the second period ended with Princeton again leading by one.
Enter Munro, whose shorthanded heroics tied the game and sent it into overtime. The Black Bears outshot Princeton 2-0 in the extra period and 30-18 overall.
The Tigers are back in Orono tomorrow, taking on Maine again at 3:00pm at Alfond Arena.
