Princeton, N.J. - Senior Natalie Deffenbaugh (Columbia, Md.) recently became the recipient of the Daniel Sachs Class of 1960 Memorial Scholarship. The Sachs scholarship provides a senior interested in public service the opportunity to study, work or travel abroad after graduation.
Deffenbaugh is a two-time heptagonal champion and an All-Ivy selection for the past three years. She won the 800m at the indoor HEPs and was also a member of the champion 4x800m relay team her freshman season.
Deffenbaugh is a physics major and is working toward a certificate in medieval studies. The Sachs scholarship pays for Deffenbaugh's tuition and living expenses for two years at Worcester College at Oxford University where she will pursue her interest in national and public policy. The committee that oversees the scholarship initially received 25 applications and subsequently narrowed the field to 11 who would receive interviews. After the interview process, Deffenbaugh was the clear choice of the committee.
"The team and myself are quite proud of Natalie's accomplishments, she is the true definition of a scholar athlete," says head women's track and field coach Peter Farrell. "She's a physics major, with a certificate in medieval studies, who is going to Oxford to study economics and politics, it goes to show how well rounded and gifted she is."
Along with competing on the cross country and track and field teams, Deffenbaugh has served as a peer tutor in math and physics and sings in the chapel choir.
