NEW YORK, NY - Adam Balkan's two-out diving catch with one runner on in the bottom of the seventh inning secured Princeton's 7-6 win over Columbia in game one of Saturday afternoon's Ivy League Gehrig Division doubleheader at Coakley Field in New York, NY. The Tigers carried that momentum into the second half of the doubleheader and came away with a 14-7 win. Princeton improves to 15-17, 10-4 Ivy, while Columbia falls to 16-17, 6-4.
These two teams came into today's contest in a tie atop the division standings. The Tigers have now won five out of their last six games against the Lions and are 13-1 against Columbia over the last four seasons
In the first game Princeton jumped on Columbia starter Matt Waldman and posted seven runs in the first three innings which gave the Tigers just enough of a cushion to survive the Lions' six-run rally. Tim Lahey opened the second inning with a walk, moved to second on Balkan's single to center and then scored on Eric Voelker's single up the middle. The runners advanced to second and third on a balk and Balkan scored when Mike Chernoff reached base on an error by the third baseman. The third run crossed the play when Pat Boran hit a sacrifice fly to centerfield to score Voelker. v Jon Miller hit a leadoff homerun that cleared the scoreboard in left center to open the third inning. Miller's bat was hot all day as he went 4-for-8 with four RBIs and one run scored. Ryan Reich and Eldridge followed that with singles. A wild pitch from Waldman scored Reich and then Boran stroked a two-run single to left to score Voelker and Eldridge for a 7-0 Princeton lead.
Columbia started to chip away at that lead with three runs in the bottom of the third inning on two hits and two Princeton errors. Derek Johnson hit a two-run single to centerfield to highlight the inning for the Lions.
The hosts first run of the three-run fourth inning crossed the plate due to a wild pitch. Matt Buckmiller hit a two-run double to center that scored Jorge Livermore and Peter Korbel and brought the Lions to within one run at 7-6, but that was as close as they would get in the first game.
Princeton starter Ross Ohlendorf improved to 4-2 with his six-inning performance this afternoon. He scattered seven hits and six runs, three of them earned, while striking out three. Thomas Pauly pitched the bottom of the seventh inning, gave up one hit and recorded two strikeouts en route to picking up his seventh save of the season. Pauly is how tied for second in Princeton's record books for saves in a season, two behind the record of nine saves, set by David Boehle in 2000.
The momentum from the first win carried over into the second game. Princeton posted two runs in the top of the first inning on Reich's two-run double to right center. Reich finished the day 4-for-9 with three RBIs.
Columbia put an unearned run on the board in the third inning to cut the lead to 2-1, but the Tigers came back to score five runs on four hits and three errors in a wild top half of the fourth inning. Two of those runs scored on a wild pitch and another scored on Balkan's single through the left side of the infield.
Princeton would hold onto its 7-1 lead until the Lions tied it up at 7-7 with six runs in the bottom of the seventh. Jason Vaughan has the start for the Tigers and was on the mound thorough the first four batters of the seventh inning. He gave up 10 hits and four earned runs in the no decision. Vaughan had not allowed an earned run in 24.1 innings. Mark Siano came in and pitched the final 3.0 innings, earning the win to improve to 3-1 on the season. He scattered four hits and two earned runs, while recording three strikeouts.
The Tigers put four runs up in the top of the eighth and then slammed the door on Columbia with three runs in the top of the ninth inning. Eric Voelker started the eighth inning off with a single. He tuned in a solid day at the plate for Princeton, going 3-for-6 with one RBI and three runs scored. Steve Young pinch ran for Voelker, stole second and then scored when the pitcher fielded a Chernoff bunt attempt and threw it over the first baseman's head. Miller's sacrifice fly to left plated Chernoff and then Eldridge roped a two-run double to right that scored Balkan and Boran for a 11-7 lead.
Singles by Chernoff, Eric Fitzgerald and Jon Miller, and a double from Balkan were responsible for the three Princeton runs in the top of the ninth as the Tigers held on for the 14-7 win.
The series will conclude with a doubleheader that begins tomorrow at noon. Those games will conclude Princeton's 10-game road trip. The Tigers will host Monmouth on Wednesday, April 24 at 3 p.m. at Clarke Field.
