NEW YORK, NY - Princeton cranked out 11 runs on 12 hits en route to a 11-4 win in game one of its Ivy League Gehrig Division doubleheader with Columbia on Sunday afternoon. The Lions posted five runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to come from behind and steal a 6-5 win in the second game of the day to close out the four-game series, but the Tigers were able to come out of the series with a 3-1 edge. Princeton now stands 16-18, 11-5 in the Ivy League. Columbia is 17-18, 7-5 in league play.
Adam Balkan was 3-for-4 with four RBIs and two runs scored in the first game of the day. He crushed a 1-0 pitch over the 24-foot fence in centerfield for a two-run homerun, the first of his career, in the fifth inning. Ryan Eldridge also turned in a strong performance at the plate, going 3-for-5 with two RBIs and one run scored. Eldridge tagged an RBI triple into the right field corner with two outs in the third, and added a solo shot to right center in the seventh inning. Mike Chernoff made a clutch diving catch on Jorge Livermore's line drive up the middle with two runners on base and two out in the bottom of the fourth to keep the score knotted at 2-2.
The Tigers blew the doors off the first game with six runs in the top of the seventh inning. Princeton held a tenuous 5-4 lead going into the inning, but took advantage of three Lion errors and four hits to secure the 11-4 win. Eric Fitzgerald hit an RBI double to center, and Balkan added a two-run double to center in the inning.
Ryan Quillian got the start for the Tigers and earned his first win of the season to bring his record to 1-4. He threw five innings and gave up four runs on five hits. He walked three and struck out three. Thomas Pauly came in to pitch in the sixth and earned his eighth save of the season. He gave up one hit and recorded on strikeout in two innings of work. Pauly is now second in Princeton's record books for saves in a season, one behind the record of nine saves, set by David Boehle in 2000.
In the second game, the Tigers looked to have a comfortable 5-1 lead going into the bottom of the eighth inning. They put s two runs on the board in the top of the first on one hit and two errors. Balkan singled through the right side of the infield to score Pat Boran for the first run of the game and then scored on and error by the third baseman.
The Lions committed a total of nine errors on the day, while Princeton only had one.
The Tigers increased the lead to 3-0 on Jon Miller's RBI single up the middle in the top of the third. Miller went 1-for-4 with one RBI and one run scored in each of the games this afternoon.
Eric Voelker singled through the left side of the infield in the top of the sixth to plate Miller, and then scored on Steve Young's infield single. That gave Princeton a 5-1 lead.
That would not last as Columbia put five runs on the board on two hits in the eighth to take a 6-5 lead, but the Tigers fought back and had a chance to knot the game in the ninth. Balkan drew a two-out walk and then went all the way to third when Miller's grounder was thrown away by the Columbia shortstop to put runners at the corners with two outs. Columbia closer Jessen Grant was able to cancel the threat and strike out Tyler Hassen for the final out and a 6-5 win.
David Boehle had the start for the Tigers in the second game and gave up five hits and just one run through seven innings. He walked one batter, while striking out five. Scott Hindman faced four batters in the eighth and was charged with two walks and four runs. Pauly came in with the bases loaded and no outs and ended up with the loss to drop to 1-1. He gave up two hits and one run in the outing.
The Tigers went into the weekend series tied with the Lions at the top of the Gehrig Division standings. Princeton took the first two by withstanding Lion rallies in both games and hold on for 7-6 and 14-7 wins. The two teams now each have five losses, but Princeton holds the edge with four more Ivy games under its belt. The Lions will meet Cornell next weekend in Ithaca before closing out the Ivy portion of their season on May 4-5 with a home-and-home four-game series vs. Penn. Princeton will travel to Cornell for a pair of games on May 3 before returning home to close out the four-game series on May 5.
Princeton will return from its 10-game road trip to host Monmouth on Wednesday, April 24 at 3 p.m.
