Princeton, N.J. - Sophomore Theresa Sherry scored four goals and assisted on another as Princeton won its ninth straight game, trouncing Yale 11-5 at Class of 1952 Stadium on Saturday afternoon. Sherry scored the game's first and last goals to help the Tigers move to 3-0 in the Ivy League.
For the second straight game, Princeton led from start to finish. Sherry started things off by connecting on her first goal of the game at 1:48. Senior Mimi Hammerberg made the game 2-0 with a goal at the four-minute mark and Sherry knocked in her second goal at 7:55 to put the Tigers up 3-0. Princeton scored four more first-half goals and led 7-3 at the break.
"We knew that Yale had something to prove today," says junior Rachael Becker. "That's why we wanted to come out here and put them away early." The Bulldogs came in ranked No. 12 in the national poll, sporting a 7-1 overall record and a 3-0 Ivy League record. The Tigers, ranked No. 2 nationally, had won 10 straight meetings with Yale prior to today's contest.
The second half started with senior Kim Smith scoring off a Lauren Simone assist. Yale won the ensuing draw, but Becker forced a turnover and connected with senior Charlotte Kenworthy, dishing out a perfect pass in front of the goal. Kenworthy's goal made the score 9-3 and gave Becker her second assist on the day.
Kenworthy picked up her 100th career point with that goal and Smith finished the game with two goals to attain sole possession of fifth place on the all-time scoring list with 166 career points. Hammerberg, Kenworthy, junior Alex Fiore and freshmen Lindsey Biles and Elizabeth Pillion all registered one goal in the win while freshman Sarah Kolodner recorded 10 saves in 60 minutes of action.
Princeton outshot Yale 36-23 and picked up three times as many groundballs, finishing with 36 on the day. The Tigers improve to 9-1 on the year and extend their win streak against Yale to 11 games. Princeton will be on the road next week with games at Temple on April 10 and at Harvard on April 13.
