Vaughan Hurls One-Hitter As Baseball Sweeps Dartmouth

PRINCETON, NJ - Southpaw Jason Vaughan (Fr., Garland, TX) pitched a one-hitter over 8.1 innings to shut down the Dartmouth bats and give Princeton a 1-0 win in the second game of Sunday afternoon's Ivy League doubleheader against the Big Green. Ryan Eldridge (Fr., Stafford, VA) went 3-for-3 with four RBIs and one run scored in the opener to lead the Tigers to an 11-2 win. Princeton improves to 10-15, 6-2 in the Ivy League, while Dartmouth drops to 8-10, 0-2.
The Big Green jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning of the first game with what proved to be the only two runs they would be able to muster against the Princeton pitching staff. Leadoff hitter Jason DaCosta reached on an error and then advanced to second on the play. Josh Cushman grounded out but advanced DaCosta to third. Scott Shirrell stepped to the plate and tripled to right center to score DaCosta. Shirrell crossed the plate with the Big Green's second run after Mike Mileusnic singled to right field. Princeton took the lead with three runs on two hits in the bottom of the first. Pat Boran (Sr., Pottsville, PA) opened the inning with a walk and advanced to third on a wild pitch and Steve Young's (Fr., Brabada Hills, CA) ground out to the shortstop. Adam Balkan (Fr., Roslyn, NY) walked to put runners at the corners with one out and Ryan Reich (So., Ocean City, NJ) ripped a double to left that scored Boran for the first run of the inning. Eldridge then stepped to the place and stroked a double to left center to score Balkan and Reich to give Princeton a 3-2 lead.
The Tigers did not stop there as they added two runs in the second inning and six in the third to take a 11-2 lead. In the second, Boran doubled to left center to score Eric Fitzgerald (So., Bellaire, TX), and then scored on Balkan's sacrifice fly to left.
The big inning for Princeton came in the bottom of the third when six runners crossed the plate on five hits. Eldridge opened the inning with a single, and then added two more RBI with a two-run single to right. Eric Voelker (Sr., Hoboken, NJ), Tim Lahey (So., Worcester, MA) and Boran each added an RBI in the inning.
Ross Ohlendorf (Fr., Austin, TX) got the start and struck out seven, while giving up just three hits and one earned run over five innings. Top Rowland (Sr., Lake Bluff, IL) came on in the sixth and retired the side. Nick Pappas (Sr., Metairio, LA) closed out the game by pitching the seventh inning, giving up one hit.
Mike Chernoff's (Jr., Livingston, NJ) one-out single through the right side to score Eldridge in the second proved to be the only run of the second game. Eldridge opened the inning with a single up the middle. Jon Miller (Jr., Washington, DC) walked and to give the Tigers runners at first and second with one out and set the table for Chernoff.
Vaughan shut down the Big Green in the first game. Their only hit came in the first inning when Shirell was able to run out an infield single. He recorded four strikeouts en route to the win. He improves to 2-1 with the win. Thomas Pauly (So., Atlantic Beach, FL) pitched the last two-thirds of the ninth inning to record his fifth save of the season.
Princeton will open a 10-game road trip at Rutgers on Tuesday, April 9 at 3 p.m. The Tigers return to Ivy League action on Saturday, April 13 when they meet Brown. They continue on to Yale for a pair of games on Sunday, April 14. Both doubleheaders are scheduled for noon.
