PISCATAWAY, NJ - Chris Higgins scattered three hits over six innings and Pat Boran went 2-for-3 with three runs scored and four stolen bases to lead Princeton to an 8-1 win over Rutgers in non-conference action on Tuesday afternoon. The victory is the Tigers first win over the Scarlet Knights since a two-game sweep during the 1991 season. The win improves Princeton to 11-14, while Rutgers drops to 15-12.
The Tigers jumped on Rutgers starter David Santiago and posted three runs in the top of the first inning. Boran was hit by the first pitch of the game and then promptly stole second and third. Adam Balkan scored Boran with a single through the left side, and then stole second. Ryan Reich ripped a double to left center to score Balkan and then scored the third run of the inning on an error by the shortstop. Rutgers posted its only run of the game in the bottom of the first inning when Jeff Frazer singled home Craig Badger with two outs to cut the lead to 3-1.
Princeton added another run in the top of the fifth inning. Boran started things off with a single through the left side of the infield and then stole second. He stole third and then scored on the same play as the ball got past the catcher and beat the throw to the plate.
Mike Chernoff's double down the left field line closed the books on Santiago. Boran singled off of relief pitcher Sean Atchison and Eric Fitzgerald followed that with a double to left field to score Chernoff. After a walk to Balkan, Jason Bergmann came to the mound for the Scarlet Knights. Ryan Eldridge tagged a single to left that plated Boran and Steve Young hit a sacrifice fly to left that scored Fitzgerald for the third run of the inning.
One more run in the top of the ninth provided the final 8-1 margin. The Tigers had bases loaded on two walks and an error when Young was hit by a pitch to score Balkan with the final run of the game.
Thomas Pauly came on in relief of Higgins and pitched the last three innings to earn his sixth save of the season. He gave up two hits and one walk while recording three strikeouts in the appearance.
Princeton returns to Ivy League action on Saturday, April 13 when it travels to meet Brown. They continue on to Yale for a pair of games on Sunday, April 14. Both doubleheaders are scheduled for noon.
