Meagan Hoffmann gave Connecticut a two-goal advantage with just under eight minutes left and the Huskies held off a late charge by Princeton in the final minutes on the way to a 2-1 victory over the Tigers in a field hockey game played at Class of 1952 Stadium Saturday afternoon.
The 13th-ranked Huskies (9-4) led 1-0 at hafltime and 2-0 after Hofffmann's goal but had to hang on against the No. 10 Tigers (6-3), who outshot Connecticut 12-3 in the second half and had 19 penalty corners in the game. Shahrzad Joharifard finally got Princeton on the board with 3:09 left in the game to pull the Tigers within one, but UConn and goalie Maureen Butler (12 saves) held on for the win.
Princeton's best chance to tie the game came when Natalie Martirosian gained control of the ball in the UConn zone just after Joharifard's goal, but Butler came out of the cage to kick the ball away before Martirosian could attempt a shot.
The Huskies took a 1-0 lead with just 1:15 left in the first half when Lauren Henderson finished a nice one-on-one run with a shot into the lower right part of the net past Princeton goalie Juliana Simon.
Princeton outshot UConn 23-11 for the game and limited the Huskies to just one penalty corner.
The Tigers, who fell to 1-3 against ranked teams in 2003, play host to Rutgers on Sunday at Class of 1952 Stadium at 1 p.m.
