Maren Ford scored two goals, including the game winner 4:47 into the second half, and Lizzie Black added an insurance goal on a penalty-corner situation with 21 minutes left as the Princeton field hockey team defeated Rutgers, 3-1, in a game played at Class of 1952 Stadium Sunday afternoon.
Ford, who scored her fourth and fifth goals of the season, tied the game at 1-1 midway through the first half, crashing the net and redirecting a Natalie Martirosian shot into the cage at the 20:59 mark. The sophomore then gave Princeton (7-3) a 2-1 lead early in the second half, collecting a rebound of a Martirosian shot and chipping the ball past Rutgers goalie Aga Sieminginowska. ?We've been working on finishing plays when we get opportunities and we were able to do that today, ?said Martirosian. ?After yesterday (a 2-1 loss to No. 13 Connecticut), it was nice to come out and play well today.?
The Scarlet Knights (7-8) didn't make it easy for the Tigers, scoring less than seven minutes into the game to take a 1-0 lead. Ashley Recker's penalty corner found the stick of Jennifer Noon, and Noon fed the ball to Megan Cech, who drove a shot past Princeton goalie Allison Nemeth at the 6:43 mark. The shot was Rutgers' only shot of the first half.
Sieminginowska helped keep the Scarlet Knights in the game, stopping nine of Princeton's 19 shots, but the Tigers would put the game away midway through the second half. Cory Picketts' penalty corner was stopped by Claire Miller, and Black took Miller's feed and drove a shot past the Rutgers goalie for her fifth goal of the season.
?We responded very well today after an emotional game yesterday,? said Princeton head coach Kristen Holmes-Winn. ?I thought we pretty much controlled the play, and I'm happy with how we're improving as the season goes on.?
The Tigers had nine penalty corners to just three for Rutgers, which was limited to just four shots overall by the Princeton defense. Princeton, ranked No. 10 nationally in the STX/NFHCA poll, defeated the Scarlet Knights for the seventh straight time.
Allison Nemeth had one save in goal for Princeton, which plays an Ivy League match at Brown next Saturday before hosting seventh-ranked Old Dominion at Class of 1952 Stadium on Sunday.
