Cambridge, Mass. - Maura Gallagher called it a frustrating day. It could have been much worse.
Gallagher, who twice earlier had hit the post, scored the lone goal for 24th-ranked Princeton with 20 minutes remaining in the second half to salvage a 1-1 tie against Harvard Saturday at Ohiri Field.
"It was a frustrating game," said Gallagher. "I was starting to wonder if we were going to score. We kept pushing, and we finally broke through."
The tie left Princeton at 9-1-3 overall, 3-1-1 in the Ivy League, while Harvard is now 5-4-5, 1-1-3. The Tigers fell further behind Dartmouth (4-0-0 Ivy League prior to Sunday's game against Columbia) in the league race.
Gallagher's goal came after Princeton had trailed for nearly 60 minutes. Harvard's Liza Barber scored on a header off a corner kick 10 minutes into the first half, and Princeton struggled to try to tie it from there. Princeton's best opportunity came from Gallagher, who drilled a shot off the crossbar about 10 minutes before she tied it. Her tying goal, her fourth of the season, was on a similar shot after she brought the ball down the left side.
Harvard had the best opportunity the rest of the way, and it came early in the first overtime. Alisha Moran appeared to have an opening towards a breakaway, but Janine Willis managed to push the ball away with a sliding defensive play.
"It was a good game," said Princeton coach Julie Shackford. "I thought both teams played well. It was a tough game. We were behind for a long time, but I kept thinking we would be able to get one."
Princeton is at Syracuse Wednesday before returning home to take on Cornell next Saturday (Nov. 1, 4 p.m.).
