BOSTON - Ashley Sennett scored two goals, including the game winner 11 minutes into the first half, and the Princeton field hockey team scored five unanswered goals after falling behind early as the Tigers defeated Boston University, 5-1, in a non-conference game Sunday afternoon.
Princeton (11-3), which won its season-high fifth straight game, also got good news from Philadelphia when Penn lost to Yale in an Ivy League game. The Penn loss gives Princeton the Ivy League's automatic NCAA tournament berth since the Tigers can now tie for the title only with Harvard, whom Princeton defeated 3-2 on Saturday. Princeton can win at outright league title by defeating the Quakers in two weeks.
The Tigers fell behind just 1:17 into today's game when BU's Celeste Hubbard fed forward Lindsey Domers alone in front of the Princeton cage, but Princeton responded quickly after that to take control of the game. The first Tigers goal came off a corner, as senior Cory Picketts assisted on a goal by junior Alexis Martirosian to tie the score at 1-1 6:40 into the game. The Tigers then took the lead for good less than five minutes later, when junior Natalie Martirosian gave Sennett a nice feed on a breakaway and a patient Sennett waited for BU goalkeeper Erin Prediger to commit before scoring the first of her two goals to give Princeton a 2-1 advantage. Princeton then added insurance in the second half when junior Shahrzad Joharifard beat Prediger at 40:21 to push the Tigers' lead to 3-1. Sennett and junior Lauren Quinn would add scores at 49:13 and 62:45 to put the game out of reach.
BU did not record a shot or a penalty corner in the second half, while Princeton had nine shots and six corners in the period.
Both teams made goalkeeper substitutions in the second half. Princeton replaced freshman Allison Nemeth with classmate Juliana Simon at 55:21, and BU put junior Jodie Gardner in for the last 19:43. Prediger made five saves while giving up four goals. Gardner made two saves and allowed a single goal. Nemeth made the only Tigers' stop.
Along with Sennett's two-goal performance, junior Lizzie Black had two assists for Princeton. Black led both teams with four shots.
Princeton, now the Ivy League champion for the 10th consecutive season, plays William & Mary and Old Dominion next weekend in Norfolk, Va.
