Ginny Sutton and Shannon Karl scored early first-half goals for William & Mary and the Tribe held off a Princeton charge in the second half on the way to a 3-2 victory over the Tigers in a field hockey game played at Old Dominion's Foreman Field Friday night.
The 14th-ranked Tribe (12-4), which won its third straight game and for the ninth time in its last 10 games, led 2-0 after 13 minutes after Karl scored on a penalty corner situation. Princeton (11-4) cut the William & Mary lead to 2-1 as time expired in the first half when Lizzie Black scored on a penalty corner situation, but the Tribe again took a two-goal lead seven minutes into the second half when Kelly McQuade scored off a pass from Jill Hocutt.
No. 8 Princeton, which saw a five-game winning streak come to an end, would cut the lead to 3-2 when Maren Ford scored with eight minutes left but could not get the tying goal. The Tigers outshot William & Mary 8-3 in the second half and had nine penalty corners in the final 35 minutes, but Tribe goalie Stacey Gaenzle had six of her seven saves in the second half to help the Tribe hold on for the win.
Allison Nemeth had six of her seven saves in the first half for Princeton as the Tribe outshot the Tigers 11-4 in the first 35 minutes.
Princeton, which lost for the first time since an Oct. 11 defeat against Connecticut, plays Sunday at 12th-ranked Old Dominion. The Tigers defeated the Lady Monarchs by a 2-1 score at Class of 1952 Stadium less than two weeks ago.
