NORFOLK, Va. - Prior to Sunday, the powerful Old Dominion field hockey program hadn't lost five consecutive games since the mid-1970's. But on Sunday, the Lady Monarchs took out some of their frustration about that streak on a Princeton team that had handed ODU one of those five straight losses.
Jenna McLane, Rosalinda Banuelos and Dana Sensenig each scored twice and Angie Loy added a goal and two assists as the No. 14 Lady Monarchs avenged that defeat two weeks ago and broke their five-game losing skid with an 8-2 victory over No. 8 Princeton at Foreman Field Sunday afternoon.
The eight goals allowed by the Tigers (11-5) marked the most by a Princeton opponent since an identical 8-2 loss at ODU nearly four years to the day of Sunday's game. The Tigers, who lost to William & Mary in a neutral-site game at Foreman Field Friday night, have lost two straight games for the first time this season. Princeton had defeated ODU, 2-1, at Class of 1952 Stadium Oct. 19. The Lady Monarchs (11-9) put the game away early on Sunday, getting two goals from McLane in a 46-second span to take a 2-0 lead 8:30 into the first half. McLane then assisted on goals by Cora Gerardi and Banuelos midway through the half as ODU took an insurmountable 4-0 lead 19 minutes into the game.
ODU scored on four of its seven first-half shots against Princeton goalie Allison Nemeth, who had a season-high 12 saves two weeks ago against the Lady Monarchs and entered the game ranked fifth nationally in goals-against average. But Old Dominion proved to be equally effective against fellow freshman goalie Juliana Simon, scoring four times in the second half, including a Sensenig goal 33 seconds after halftime.
Lauren Quinn scored her sixth goal of the season 24 seconds after Sensenig's goal to pull Princeton within 5-1, and Shahrzad Joharifard then scored on a penalty-corner situation less than six minutes after that to give the Tigers some life at 5-2. But Sensenig scored again two minutes later to start a three-goal ODU run that included a Banuelos goal with 15:51 left and Loy's goal with just under six minutes remaining.
The Tigers did have 11 penalty corners to just three for ODU, including seven corners in the second half. Nemeth and Simon combined for four saves as the Lady Monarchs scored on eight of their 15 shots.
Natalie Martirosian had an assist on Quinn's goal for Princeton, while Cory Picketts and Claire Miller had assists on Joharifard's score. McLane added two assists for ODU, which also got seven saves from Tina Walker.
Princeton concludes the regular season at Penn Friday night (7 p.m.), looking to complete a fourth-straight undefeated Ivy League season.
NOTES
*The Tigers got some good news away from Norfolk Saturday when Dartmouth upset Harvard 4-3 in overtime in an Ivy League game. That result gave the Tigers an outright Ivy League title no matter the result of Friday's regular-season finale at Penn. Princeton has now won 10 straight Ivy League championships.
