PHILADELPHIA - The Princeton field hockey team is headed to the NCAA tournament on a winning note, and the Tigers' Ivy League winning streak continues through yet another championship season.
Ashley Sennett put the Tigers ahead eight minutes into the second half and Maren Ford added a goal and an assist in the final minutes as Princeton defeated Penn, 3-1, to finish a perfect 7-0 in the Ivy League for the fourth straight season and extend its winning streak in league games to 31.
"We played well tonight," said Princeton head coach Kristen Holmes-Winn. "We passed well, controlled possession and took advantage of our opportunities in the second half." Despite a 17-6 advantage in shots and a 14-4 advantage in penalty corners, however, the game wasn't really decided until the final minute, when Kelly Darling scored her second goal of the season thanks to an assist from Ford. Princeton (12-5, 7-0) looked like it had put the game away with 2:31 left when Ford scored her team-leading eighth goal of the year to put her team ahead 2-0, but Penn's Liz Lorelli scored for Penn (10-7, 3-4) on a penalty corner situation just 1:20 later to give the Quakers hope.
Sennett's goal, her fifth of the season, was a backhanded shot that found the right corner of the net past Penn goalie Liz Schlossberg 8:06 into the second half. Lorelli's goal for the Quakers was her league-leading 19th goal and gave her at least one goal for the eighth straight game.
Princeton, which defeated Penn for the 10th consecutive year, hasn't lost an Ivy League game since a 2-1 loss at Brown in October 1999. Seniors Claire Miller and Cory Picketts finished a perfect 31-0 in league games for the Tigers, who are 66-1 in Ivy League games since the beginning of the 1994 season.
Allison Nemeth had two saves in goal for the Tigers and improved to 10-2 overall on the season, while Schlossberg was tested often in the Quaker net and had six saves.
The Tigers, who had clinched the Ivy League's automatic NCAA berth two weeks ago, will play in their fourth straight NCAA tournament beginning next Sat., Nov. 15. Selections for the NCAA championship will be announced on Tues., Nov. 11, at 8 p.m. EST and can be seen via webcast at www.ncaasports.com.
