The Princeton field hockey team, which finished a fourth straight undefeated Ivy League season this past Friday with a 3-1 win at Penn, will find out its NCAA tournament fate Tuesday night when selections for the 16-team NCAA Division I Field Hockey Championships are announced.
The selection show will be webcast at www.ncaasports.com beginning at 8 p.m. EST Tuesday, and the Tigers will watch the selection show as a team in Room 28 of McCosh Hall on the Princeton campus.
As the Ivy League champion for the 10th straight year, Princeton (12-5, 7-0 Ivy) is one of six conference champions to earn automatic qualification into this year's championship. Northeastern (America East), Michigan State (Big 10), Boston College (Big East), Louisville (Mid-American) and Old Dominion (Colonial Athletic Association) are the other automatic qualifiers.
Four teams will battle for two spots in the tournament in NCAA play-in games to be contested Tuesday. Richmond will play California and Quinnipiac will play American, with the winners earning NCAA berths. The remaining eight teams will be selected on an at-large basis.
Four campus sites will host first- and second-round games on Sat., Nov. 15, and Sun., Nov. 16. The NCAA semifinals and championship game take place Fri., Nov. 21 and Sun., Nov. 23 at the University of Massachusetts' Garber Field.
Princeton will be making its ninth NCAA tournament appearance overall and its ninth in the past 10 seasons. The Tigers have advanced to the national championship game twice (1996, 1998), the semifinal round four times and at least the second round in seven of their previous eight appearances.
