Storrs, Conn. - Freshman Liz Keady scored two goals and three other Tigers posted two points as the Princeton women's hockey team completed a weekend sweep with a 6-1 win over Connecticut Sunday afternoon at the UConn Ice Arena.
Senior Gretchen Anderson opened the scoring just 10 seconds into the game and Princeton never looked back en route to the 6-1 win. Anderson scored her second goal of the season off her own rebound after the opening face-off to give the Tigers a lead they would not relinquish.
Princeton went ahead 2-0 on the power-play midway through the second period. Sophomore Sarah Butsch tallied her second goal in as many nights, with assists coming from junior Becky Stewart and freshman Laura Watt. Both of Butsch's goals this season are special teams goals, one on the power-play and one shorthanded. Watt's assist was the first point of her career, and she was one of three Tigers to earn their first collegiate points in the game. Another Tiger do this was Keady. At 16:34, she beat UConn netminder Shannon Murphy while Princeton had an extra-attacker on the ice. Seniors Lisa Rasmussen and Angela Gooldy tallied assists on Keady's first goal.
Shannon Connolly put the Huskies on the board six minutes into the third period, but Princeton answered back, scoring three more goals to arrive at the 6-1 final. Sophomore Chrissie Norwich scored at 10:52 on a feed from Butsch and Stewart. A minute later, it was Rasmussen scoring her second on the season from Norwich, and another minute later, Keady notched her second, on a setup from freshman Kim Pearce and sophomore Laura Stroessner. Pearce's assist was her first college point and came in her first game.
Rasmussen and Keady's third-period goals were both on the power-play, which Princeton executed exceptionally, going three-for-six on the afternoon.
Senior Megan Van Beusekom backstopped Princeton to the win for the second straight day, stopping 17 UConn shots. She is now 2-0-0 with a 0.50 goals-against average for the season.
Princeton is now 2-0-0 and has non-conference match-ups with Maine and Northeastern next weekend in Boston. The Tigers meet Maine at 4 p.m., on Saturday, and Northeastern at 2 p.m. on Sunday.
