Lincoln, Neb. - Freshman Casey Lockwood had a game-high 20 points, seven rebounds and two steals in her collegiate debut as the Princeton women's basketball team dropped its season-opener to Nebraska 75-61 in front on 2,008 fans at the Bob Devaney Sports Center in Lincoln, Neb.
Princeton played evenly with the Huskers for 33 minutes except for a seven-minute slump in the middle of the first half. The Tigers held Nebraska to 24 points below its average from its two exhibition games and first regular-season game.
"We missed some easy shots that led to transition points for them, but for the most part we got the shots we wanted," head coach Richard Barron said. "I think we got a lot of confidence from this game, knowing we can execute our offenses against Big 12 athleticism." Nebraska started the game with a full-court man-to-man press that Princeton easily handled, helping the Tigers setup and execute their offense. Katy O'Brien first put Princeton on the board with a three and combined with Lockwood to score Princeton's first nine points.
The game was even and had six lead changes in the first 20 minutes before Princeton tied the score at 20-20 off a three-pointer by freshman Katy Digovich with 10:40 to play in the first half.
After a Nebraska timeout, the Huskers went on a 13-point run led by Alexa Johnson's seven points. Nebraska led 33-20 until Digovich broke the Tigers seven-minute scoring slump with four consecutive points. Lockwood scored once more for Princeton and ended the half with a team-high eight points. Nebraska led 42-26 at the break.
The teams began the second half much like the first. Princeton played evenly with the Huskers but Nebraska held on to its double-digit lead that it built at the end of the first half.
O'Brien finished with 13 points, eight rebounds and five assists and shot 5 for 10 from the field and 3 for 5 from the three-point line. Digovich added 12 points, including 2-for-2 shooting from the arc and 4-for-4 shooting from the line, and six rebounds for the Tigers.
The Tigers shot 64 percent from the three-point line, including 5 for 7 in the second half, and 75 percent from the foul line.
Johnson led the Huskers with 15 points while Margaret Richards and Kiera Hardy each added 12.
Princeton next plays in the Vanderbilt Tournament next weekend, Nov. 28-29, with Louisville, Samford and Vanderbilt. The Tigers first face Louisville at 5 p.m. on Friday.
