Despite a solid effort by a number of wrestlers, the Princeton Tigers opened a Michigan weekend with a 21-19 loss to Eastern Michigan on Saturday. Princeton won the first two matches and the last two, but the middleweights were controlled by Eastern Michigan. The Tigers will wrestle Central Michigan Sunday.
The Tigers jumped out to a 9-0 lead, thanks to a 6-1 win at 125 pounds by Kenny Chu and a forfeit win to Brian Kirschbaum. Princeton would lose three in a row before Matt DeNicholo earned a 10-2 major decision at 165 pounds, making the score 13-13. Jack Fleming and Ian Roncoroni lost major decisions, putting Princeton in a must-win situation for the final two matches.
The Tigers did it, but they also needed some extra points. Allen Sista recorded an overtime takedown at 197 pounds to get the score to 21-16, which sent one of Princeton's top wrestlers, heavyweight Joe Looke, in a position to earn a team win with a pin. Looke won his match, but Brandon Tate avoided the pin, and Eastern Michigan escaped with the 21-19 win.
