Katy O'Brien shot 4 for 7 behind the arc for a game-high 14 points to lead Princeton past Wagner 65-49 at Jadwin Gym. The Tigers dominated from the start and led by as many as 22 points as they improved to 2-5 overall this season.
Princeton came out using a combination of pressing, man and zone defenses that forced poor shooting by Wagner. The Seahawks struggled from the get-go, shooting just 33% from the field and 18% from three-point range.
Wagner scored first on a backdoor pass from Joy Gallagher to Carrie Walker but the 2-0 start was the Seahawks' only lead of the game. Becky Brown had two putbacks in the first three minutes and backup center Maureen McCracken scored points in the paint, causing Wagner to pack in its defense and let the Tigers shoot from the outside. O'Brien took advantage with two three-pointers in the first half while Lauren Nestor added another. Seven players scored for Princeton before halftime and the Tigers led by as many as 11.
The Seahawks went on a 6-0 run to end the half, cutting Princeton's lead to 30-25. Walker led Wagner with eight points and four rebounds at the break.
The second half was no contest as the Tigers turned a five-point edge into a double-digit lead after O'Brien hit another three at 13:53. The Seahawks didn't get any closer, sinking into a 22-point deficit - it's largest of the game - at 5:11. Vanessa Wyffels shot 4 for 8 from the floor but Wagner finished the game shooting just 30% from the field and a dismal 11% behind the arc.
Princeton had three players in double figures, including a double-double by Casey Lockwood who finished with 12 points and 10 rebounds. Katy Digovich added 10 points, eight rebounds and three assists. Both Lockwood and Digovich scored six of their points from the free-throw line. The Tigers outrebounded the Seahawks 45-40 and had just 14 turnovers to Wagner's 22.
The Tigers host two games this weekend, beginning with Wake Forest on Friday, Dec. 19 at 7 p.m.
