PRINCETON, N.J. - Gina Kingsbury scored twice for the No. 6 St. Lawrence Saints to lead her team to a 2-1 victory over the No. 7 Princeton Tigers Friday night at Baker Rink. The two teams will meet again Saturday at 4 p.m.
Princeton nearly tied the score with three seconds left. A play that originally began with a shot by Heather Jackson with less than seven seconds remaining ended up being whistled dead after the referee saw the goal come off the mooring. Unfortunately for Princeton, the whistle barely proceeded the puck being knocked into the net by a Tiger, a play that would have sent the game to overtime.
St. Lawrence outshot Princeton 28-24, thanks in large part to a 15-10 advantage in the third period. Kingsbury got the game winner on a rebound following a nice individual effort by Rebecca Russell, who skated the puck through the Tiger defense and took a shot on the doorstep. Princeton goaltender Megan Van Beusekom made the save, but the puck redirected to Kingsbury on the left side of the crease, and the senior made quick work of it. The goal came on the power play, an opportunity that came because of the second penalty called against Van Beusekom in the game. Princeton would get more opportunities late, and had six shots on goal in the third period that were right around the crease, but St. Lawrence goaltender Rachel Barrie was up to the challenge on each of them. Barrie ended the game with 23 saves, while Van Beusekom had 26.
St. Lawrence took a 1-0 lead into the first intermission, as Kingsbury rebounded a shot by Laurie Ross and fired it at Van Beusekom. The Princeton goalie was able to get her pads on the shot, but it trickled underneath and slowly made its way past the goal line.
The Tigers played clearly their best period in the second, outshooting St. Lawrence 9-4 and getting the equalizer at the 8:24 mark. Elizabeth Keady started the play, finding Laura Watt, who sent the puck to the right side of the crease, where freshman Kim Pearce was standing. With barely an angle to work with, Pearce sent a backhand to the top corner of the net, fooling Barrie. Princeton would continue to apply pressure, but it couldn't take a lead into the second intermission.
St. Lawrence came out firing in the third period, outshooting Princeton 7-1 by the time Kingsbury scored the game winner. The Tigers had to overcome a pair of penalties, including one in the final minutes, but were able to pull Van Beusekom with 1:03 remaining. The opportunity yielded a pair of good scoring chances, including one that did end up with the puck in the net.
Unfortunately, that happened a split second too late.
