New Haven, Conn. - Senior co-captains Allison Cahill and Maureen each went over 1,000-career points with double figures in a triple overtime victory at Yale on Saturday night. Cahill scored 24 points and Lane added 21 to help Princeton come out on top with a 94-92 final score.
Cahill's 24 led four Tigers in double figures. Lane had her 21 while Kelly Schaeffer and Rebecca Brown each chipped in with 16 points. Princeton made 11 three-pointers, including two in overtime to hand Yale its eight Ivy loss of the season.
Princeton went ahead early and held a 45-28 halftime advantage. The Tigers made 8-of-17 first half three-pointers and shot 47 percent from the field. Yale battled back in the second half with a big scoring performance from Christina Phillips, who ended the game with 28 points. Still, Schaeffer had an opportunity to the end the game in regulation, but her jumper rolled out as time expired. After a 5-5 first overtime, the Tigers needed something special to send the game into a third overtime. Schaeffer connected this time, hitting a long-range three-pointer to tie the score at 88-88.
Brown, who scored a double-double in Princeton's loss at Brown last night, posted another double-double tonight with 10 rebounds to go along with her 16 points. Her two free throws in the third overtime period iced the game for Princeton.
Cahill entered the game needing eight points to reach 1,000, while Lane needed 14. Lane and Cahill become the first Princeton players to reach the milestone since Maggie Langlas and Kate Thirolf accomplished the feat in 1999. Oddly enough, Langlas and Thirolf also scored their 1,000th career points on the same night. They did so against Fairfield in Hawaii.
The Tigers return to Jadwin Gym next weekend for a pair of Ivy contests against Dartmouth and Harvard. Princeton will play the Big Green on Friday night and battle the Crimson on Saturday. Both games are at 7 p.m. and can be heard live on the web at www.goprincetontigers.com. The Tigers are now 8-13 overall and 3-4 in the Ivy League.
