Men's And Women's Track Complete First Day At HEPs

HANOVER, N.H. - Senior Jon Bell and Junior Josh McCaughey both won individual titles, leading the men to a second place standing after Day 1 of the 2003 indoor heps championships.
Princeton has 42 team points after five events, trailing leader Cornell by four points.
Bell used a last lap sprint to move past Erik Schmidt of the Naval Academy and win the men's 3000m run in 8:16.41. Josh McCaughey took the lead on his fifth throw and held on to win the men's 35lb weight throw. McCaughey's winning distance of 18.67 (61-03)meters narrowly defeated Giles Longley-Cook of Cornell, who threw 18.65 meters (61-02.25).
Princeton junior Mark Smith was third with a throw of 16.60 meters (54-05.5) In other men's events, senior Javius Wynn placed second in the pentathlon and long jumpers Dwaine Banton (7.12, 23-04.5) and Derek Davis (6.79, 22-03.5) placed third and fifth for the Tigers.
On the women's side, Princeton racked up 30 team points to trail Yale by just 2 at the close of day 1 action. Junior Chelo Canino got the meet of with a bang for the Tigers as she vaulted to a new meet record of 3.92 meters (12-10.25) in winning the women's pole vault. Junior Susan Coltman ended the first day of action in similar fashion, winning the women's pentathlon with 3556 points. Sophomore Jen Byrd scored 3377 points, good enough for fifth place.
On the track, junior Emily Kroshus placed second in the women's 5000 meters with at time of 16:29.50.
