PRINCETON, N.J. - Sophomore center Judson Wallace scored a game-high 23 points while Ray Robins, who has made a career out of beating the Big Red, added 21 points to lead the Princeton men's basketball team to a 71-61 victory over Cornell Friday night in front of 4,509 fans at Jadwin Gym. Scott Greenman matched his career high with 11 points.
Princeton, which has shot at least 50.0% from the field in each of the last four games, continued that stretch by shooting 55.8% (24 for 43). Robins made eight of 10 shots, including all five attempts from inside the arc. Wallace made eight of 13 attempts, including two of three from beyond the arc, and also hit five of six free throws. Cornell was able to cut the deficit to six points on numerous occasions in the second half, but Princeton made enough free throws down the stretch to hold on for the win.
"I was pleased with the way we held on and made free throws at the end," head coach John Thompson said. "We executed as well as we could at the end."
After a pair of free throws by Ka'Ron Barnes at the 0:56 mark cut the score to 62-56, Wallace, Greenman and Ed Persia each made a pair of free throws, extending the lead to nine points with 20 seconds remaining and finally put a gutsy Cornell squad away.
Princeton had 19 assists on 24 field goals, including four apiece by Persia and Will Venable. The Tigers, who were without Konrad Wysocki because of illness, used a rotation of six players for all but one minute of the win.
Princeton's 15th win of the season was bittersweet, as a 63-39 victory by Pennsylvania over Columbia ended the Tigers' dreams of a third straight Ivy League title. Princeton will play Columbia Saturday night at Jadwin Gym.
