CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - Adele McCarthy-Beauvais scored four goals in a 11-6 win over Harvard but the Tigers then dropped a 5-1 decision to Indiana in the semifinals of the 2003 Women's Eastern Championship at Harvard's Blodgett Pool.
In the first game of the tournament against Harvard, which Princeton defeated 10-7 earlier this season, the Tigers went 2 for 2 on their 6-on-5's and used balanced scoring in the victory. McCarthy-Beauvais scored one goal in the first quarter and two, including a four-meter, in the second to help Princeton take an early lead. Megan Donahue, Jenny Edwards, and Julie Miller each scored two goals and Kathryn Parolin chipped in one while Madeline McCarthy made eight saves in goal. Harvard's Lydia Gardner was strong in the net, making nine saves, but not strong enough to handle the Tigers. Princeton advanced to the semifinals to face 13th-ranked Indiana, which handed the Tigers a 7-4 lost on April 12 at the Southern Championships and eliminated them from championship contention. Their second match-up was similar to their first, as Indiana's 5-1 win knocked Princeton out of the Easterns. The Hoosier's sophomore goalkeeper, Jessica Goldner, turned in a school record performance with 19 saves on 24 shots, a remarkable .792 save percentage against the 14th-ranked team in the nation.
Kristin Stanford opened the Hoosier scoring with the first two Indiana goals, which came on a first-quarter penalty shot and a cross-cage solo shot five minutes later.
Donahue had a fastbreak in the second period, but Goldner blocked her shot and put a lock on the first-half shutout. Edwards scored the lone goal for the Tigers with just 1:40 in the game.
Princeton now faces Michigan on Sunday in the third place game. Indiana is now 25-9 on the year, and is set to face Brown in the Eastern Championships final.
