PRINCETON, N.J. - Senior co-captains Adele McCarthy-Beauvais and Jenny Edwards made the last home game of their careers one to remember as they carried Princeton to its third ECAC Championship in four years. In the title game, McCarthy-Beauvais scored four goals and Edwards had a goal, an assist, and a team-high six steals in the Tigers 10-8 win over top-seed and defending champion Hartwick College.
"Edwards played amazing overall defense," assistant coach Serela Kay said. "We won this tourney because of our team defense and ability to transition to offense and run our plays."
The two-day road to the championship title was not an easy one as Princeton defeated four top opponents by slim margins. After a 7-2 win over Iona on Saturday morning, the Tigers faced Brown and, heading into the fourth quarter, were down 7-4 to the Bears. Princeton scored four unanswered goals in the final period to earn the 8-7 win and a chance at the ECAC title. On Sunday, the Tigers were pinned against Harvard, which defeated Bucknell 11-3 but lost to Hartwick 8-5 in the first day of games. Princeton got off to a quick start, using two of three 6-5 opportunities in the first quarter to score. Hartwick scored two goals in the second and never relented, but Princeton held on to win 10-7.
The championship game featured the two top-seeds of the ECAC tournament, but it was Princeton, the No. 2 seed, who led from the start. McCarthy-Beauvais won the sprint and scored on the first possession before Kelly Melia-Teevan, Edwards, and Megan Donahue each scored and McCarthy-Beauvais closed out the quarter with another.
Hartwick scored three goals in both the first and second but McCarthy-Beauvais scored two third quarter goals and Princeton connected on two 6-5 opportunities in the final quarter to finish on top, 10-8.
