Becky Brown poured in a game-high 18 points and 12 rebounds and Casey Lockwood had her second double-double in as many nights to lead Princeton past Yale 66-58 at Jadwin Gym. The Tigers improved to 5-11 overall and 2-1 in the Ivy League while the Bulldogs fell to 3-14 overall and 0-4 in conference play.
"This was another great game for us and we've now had back-to-back competitive games," head coach Richard Barron said.
Princeton led from the start with the help of back-to-back three-pointers by Katy O'Brien and an aggressive defense that forced Yale into sloppy play. Despite six early points and 4-for-4 free-throw shooting from Yale's Brynn Gingras, the Bulldog offense never got into a flow. Yale had six turnovers in the first six minutes as the Tigers built as much as a 12-point first-half lead. The Bulldogs finished the half with 11 turnovers and 28% field goal shooting while Princeton hit 5 of 10 shots behind the arc.
O'Brien went 3 for 6 and Ali Smith shot 2 for 3 from long range to give the Tigers a 33-25 lead at halftime. Lockwood had six points, six rebounds and two assists at the break.
The Bulldogs, desperate for a conference win after a 0-3 start in Ivy League action, came out strong in the second and outscored Princeton 14-4 in the first seven minutes. All five Yale starters contributed points in the run while the Tigers turned the ball over seven times and fell behind for the first time, 37-39, at 13:14.
But the two-point lead was short-lived as Brown, Lockwood and Katy Digovich dominated in the paint for the next three possessions and regained a 43-39 Princeton lead with 11:38 to play. Yale never led again and was forced to foul as the clock ran down but Princeton was clutch from the charity stripe, hitting 16 second-half foul shots and finishing the game shooting 80% from the line.
"Yale made some big shots in the second half but we responded well without even calling at timeout," Barron said. "We really stepped up our defense and went on a 6-0 run to build back our lead."
Brown scored 14 second-half points to fuel the Tigers while Lockwood had another complete game for Princeton with 15 points and 10 rebounds, giving her six double-doubles this season.
O'Brien and Smith also finished in double-digit scoring with 12 and 10 points apiece and a combined 6-for-11 shooting behind the arc. Digovich was once again the workhorse for Princeton with a solid nine points, seven boards, four assists and two blocks.
Morgan Richards and Erica Davis had 11 and 10 points for Yale while Gingras finished with eight points and four steals.
Princeton returns to action next weekend at Dartmouth and Harvard.
